Do you miss school?
I called my little nephew Strahinja today and asked him: „Do you miss school?“
He replied immediately, without a second of hesitation: „ Yesssssss! I can't wait to go back to school!!! I miss everything about it!
These days I keep hearing the same sentence everywhere, in the street, in a supermarket, in a bus, at home ... it’s always the same: “I miss school”.
Are you one of the people who have this on their mind? Well, I certainly know I am!
Let’s do this little test to find out! All you have to do is choose the category you belong to and read on.
What does the school mean to you?
Well, it’s safe to say that it is a safe haven for your dreams and comfort. The teacher is probably somebody who is almost like a family member and you miss her or his eyes, voice, your favourite T-shirt, skirt or jumper they wear, even their glasses and strict look behind them, you know their sunny smile and the string of teeth behind them, you recognise their car when it turns round the corner and you can’t wait to see it again parked in front of the school’s fence.
You miss your best friend who sits right next or behind you and you even miss that boy who picks on you for no good reason. You even miss waking up early, having no time for breakfast, colliding with mum and dad and your little brother or sister in the bathroom and rushing to school.
You miss opening your lunch box and finding an apple your mum packed in it! Oh, that apple could actually be healthy and tasty!
Yes, you do miss your school!
Are you happy without school?
In March you thought you were on top of the world! There were no prospects of school until September and all you saw were 5 months of prolonged summer holiday filled with laziness and devoid of any productivity.
You already saw yourself sleeping until noon every day, playing computer games, going to the beach, hanging out with your friends in the evening... Yes, it all kicked off pretty well! TV school was so casual, you didn’t do much and you really enjoyed! Early summer looked perfect!
But then the reality sank in!
Yes, you sleep until noon, but you feel so drowsy and bad-tempered from so much sleep.
You are sick and tired of playing so many games; you can’t even follow which ones you play and which ones you don’t. Your fingers are slightly numb from holding a joystick and you keep dropping things!
Beach? What beach? There are no sunny beaches in Greece! Even Montenegro is a far-fetched dream! Štrand was ok at first, but now it’s kind of boring.
Evenings are the final resort, but wherever you choose to hang out with your friends there are some annoying neighbours who can’t sleep because of your talk and they ask you to leave.
Admit it! You are not happy without school!
In March we were in a total mess, let’s call it a chaos! I was a lucky one who kept in touch regularly with her students via Skype, so I didn’t miss their smiles and little voices so much. April and May flew by in some kind of hope that I would see them before the final end of the school year. So I did, but only for a couple of weeks in June and then the official summer holiday started.
Now it’s August and I’m the first one to admit this: “Yes, I do miss school! I miss my students and my colleagues! I miss the trees outside our classroom windows! I miss our little park! I miss the feeling of mutual happiness just because we are together and we share everything!
Yes, we all miss school! We miss it because it’s larger than just an obligation! It’s far larger than that! We will leave this situation with our souls enriched with this feeling and this is a precious lesson this 2020 is set to teach us.
